Flamenco Works, Inc. a local non-profit focusing on training youth in Barelas, Albuquerque joins millions of organizations across the globe for #GivingTuesday, a day of giving back. Yet, we have decided to do something different this year. We went from serving a handful of children in 2018 to about 20+ families in 2019.  By the middle of next year we will be serving 100+ kids, many of whom come from low-income families. Flamenco Works in Barelas has attracted the community and youth in a huge way. The positive impact is demonstrated through increasingly high retention rates from both kids and volunteering families. Now that we have these kids coming through the door on a shoestring budget we ask ourselves-- What do these kids need in order to be successful and how do we support them?  We launch campaigns and write grants for scholarships so that our classes can be funded. However, the reality of grant funding is that it takes time and it is generally a slow process. Dancing Flamenco means kids need shoes and dresses now. Proper training attire is an essential part of the art form and unfortunately it becomes expensive, especially in an area where families are torn between buying a pair of shoes or putting food on the table.

This is why Flamenco Works is calling on you this season to participate in their “Flamenco Shoe Drive”.  Instead of only raising money, we looked to see what resources the community already has. As Flamenco is a deep part of the New Mexican heritage and culture, many people here have tried out a Flamenco class or are long term students. We are asking Flamenco artists and aficionados to clean out your closets and give back to the next generation of dancers by donating your used shoes, skirts and accessories.  Of course we welcome financial contributions, but this season we are asking you to dust off an old pair of shoes or a skirt and send them in. They will provide for the next generation of inspired young Flamenco artists.
